How to Replace the Fuel Filter on a 2004 Volkswagen Passat (1998 – 2005)

On a gasoline 1998-2005 Volkswagen Passat (B5 / B5.5), the fuel filter is an inline metal can under the car on the passenger side, just ahead of the right rear tire.

You do not drop the tank for this job. Drop the rear undertray, swap the filter, and put new hose clamps on while you are there.

These steps are for the common FWD gas cars with the 1.8T, 2.8 V6, and similar petrol engines. Diesel Passats use a different filter setup, and some 4MOTION / W8 cars need a different part, so match your VIN before you order.

Gas work needs care. No sparks, no smoking, jack stands under the car, and a fire extinguisher nearby. If that does not feel right, take it to a shop.

Where is the Fuel Filter on a 1998-2005 Volkswagen Passat?

Jack up the rear of the car and support it on stands, or use ramps. Look under the rear torsion beam area on the passenger side.

A plastic undertray / skid plate covers the filter. Once that guard is off, the filter sits in a metal clamp right in front of the right rear wheel.

What Parts and Tools Are Needed?

• New fuel hose clamps (about 5/16 in / 8 mm style, no screw holes in the band if you can get them)
• 10 mm socket (deep helps on the undertray bolts)
• Phillips screwdriver

• Rags and a drain pan for spilled fuel
• Optional: locking pliers with a rag to pinch the tank-side hose while you swap filters

Common OE-style numbers for the gasoline inline filter are 441 201 511 B and 441 201 511 C. Aftermarket crosses many people buy include Mann WK 725 and Bosch 0 450 905 906.

Read the stamp on the old filter and your VIN before clicking buy. A diesel filter (often a flange style such as 3B0 127 400 C) will not fit this gas layout.

Many DIY write-ups replace this filter around 60,000 miles, or sooner if the car is hard starting, loses power under load, or the old filter is badly rusted.

How Do You Relieve Fuel Pressure First?

Before you crack the hoses, kill pump power and bleed the line.

Pull the fuel pump fuse (often labeled with a small fuel-pump symbol; on many B5 cars that is fuse 28 — check the lid diagram in your fuse panel). Crank or run the engine until it stalls, then crank another couple seconds and turn the key off.

That dumps most of the pressure so the lines do not spray when the clamps come off. Keep a rag ready anyway. A little fuel will still come out.

How To Replace the Fuel Filter

1. Support the car and crawl under the passenger rear. Put blocks or stands under it in case a jack fails.

2. Remove the plastic undertray. There are usually four 10 mm bolts and one Phillips screw holding that rear cover. Drop it so the filter and clamp are clear.

3. Unbolt the filter clamp. Two 10 mm bolts hold the metal strap. Factory guide torque for that holder bolt is about 10 N·m (7 ft-lbs). Snug is enough on reinstall — do not strip the threads in the body.

4. Clamp or catch the tank hose, then open the hose clamps and pull both rubber lines off the filter. Note which hose is the tank (IN) side and which goes forward to the engine (OUT).

5. Match flow direction on the new filter. The arrow on the can points toward the front of the car (toward the engine). IN is from the tank. OUT is to the engine. Backwards will starve the rail.

6. Slide the metal holder onto the new filter, then connect the hoses with new clamps before you snug the bracket bolts. Old spring clamps that have rusted open are not worth reusing.

7. Bolt the clamp back on, put the undertray back, and lower the car. Double-check both hose ends and the clamp before you crawl out.

How Do You Prime the Fuel System After?

Put the fuel pump fuse back in. Turn the key to ON (not start) for a couple seconds, then OFF. Do that about three times so the pump fills the new filter and the line up to the rail.

Start the engine and check under the car for leaks at both hose ends before you call it done. If it cranks a little long the first time, cycle the key again and retry.
