Replacing the fuel pump on a Volkswagen Passat (1999-2005) is a job that most DIY mechanics can do.

First of all before replacing the fuel pump be sure it is bad by following our step by step guide to see if it is bad here.

Once you know it is bad and needs replacing keep in mind a special tool is supposed to be used to get the old one out and new one in.

I have changed one without the special tool but I did almost break it and it took 2-3 hours to finally get it in place right.

The next Passat I do I would definitely order the tool. Depending on how much skill you have buying the tool while suggested it can be done without it depending on your skill level.

Note: Be sure to disconnect the battery before removing the fuel pump. Gas is highly flammable so be sure to take safety precautions.

  9. A large plastic ring holds it in place and is removed by turning it counter-clockwise. A screw driver or similar usually is needed to tap on it and loosen it.

    I recently had replaced my fuel pump and was told it had to reset itself to my car, engine light came on my miles to empty was 570 not possible, it an 06 pass at 2.0 T, is this normal or was it screwed up.

    just changed my computers relay on my 2001 volkswagen passat v6 gls 4motion it now cramps and starts before it wouldn’t turn over so is it the relay when i prime the car i can hear a few ticks in there oh and idk about these but my fuel pump is under my back seat on the passager side with a metal clamp instead of that black plastic doesn’t look the same… when i crank the car it starts but only for a minute if i keep pressing the gas but dies i really need help so i can get to work ! thank you before hand
