2010 Toyota Camry P2118 ETCS Electronic Throttle Control System Problem

By | August 23, 2016

A friend of mine who has a 2010 Toyota Camry had a problem were the car ran but when the gas pedal was pressed nothing happened.

I took My OBD2 code diagnostic tool over and it gave a P2118 which is the ETCS.

First of all we still have the problem which may be a bad ECM but there are steps to check first. I am posting what I have found so far in that it may help someone else with the same problem.

The first thing to check is the fuse in the fuse box next to the battery in the engine compartment.

It is a 10 amp fuse that is marked ETCS.

After reading through forums the fuse is the most common problem and can blow if jump started wrong or similar.

The ETCS will need to reset with the key off before testing.

Hopefully, it is only a blown fuse but in our case the fuse while bad did not fix the problem when replaced.

A P2118 error code means the Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) is not seeing power at the ECM.

Here is the official definition.
P2118 Toyota Description The Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) has a dedicated power supply circuit. The voltage (+BM) is monitored and when the voltage is low (less than 4 V), the Engine Control Module (ECM) concludes that the ETCS has a fault and current to the throttle actuator is cut. When the voltage becomes unstable, the ETCS itself becomes unstable. For this reason, when the voltage is low, the current to the actuator is cut. If repairs are made and the system has returned to normal, turn the ignition switch OFF. The ECM then allows current to flow to the actuator and actuator can be restarted.

Here is a diagram.

Testing continuity from the fuse to the harness +BM is the next step to be sure there is not a break in the line.

The wire going to it may have shorted out or have an open and need testing.

We are currently at this stage and due to weather had to stop.

UPDATE: The Camry had a bad pin in the harness that once repaired the error cleared.

Information I have found
The ETCS itself is located on the throttle body and can be tested by Ohms with a meter.

Usually a P2118 is not a bad ETCS itself and is the fuse, wiring, or ECM.

If you need to pull the fuse box in search of a bad wire here is a good tutorial.

2007-2011 Toyota Camry should be the same but I am not completely sure on this.

Not a lot of information is on online about this problem yet.

    Hello BYM,
I am currently trying to resolve my P2118 on my 04 Camry and it sucks because I am on fixed income and can’t afford those parts new because even on my 15 year old car the parts at auto stores are to expensive. Bro in law is to busy with his kids and life to help me, mechanics buddy is not electrical enough but we got throttle and tps from yard because I’m pretty sure tps is on throttle I mean they could be bad but next thing were trying is APPS from yard. Gonna check my fuses again. Wish me luck and please help me with good wishes because I need this and it’s been down to long. :..^(

Thank you so much. I have been to the dealership twice and no one had a clue about this. I was advised to leave the car overnight and it would be handled by a master technician. Aren’t all of them proficient? Let me frustrated beyond belief. Much appreciated

IN this they are three things involve, (one the fuse) two, (the throttle Actuator it self) three ,(the ECU) As far as it conses the code P2118 .

Well I was in the same situation where I knew I had a badd battery, Which was eventually confirmed.
When I had someone jump start me, I saw a husband and wife kinda chuckle at 1 another while he was doing the wires and she slapped his hand, and I thought in my head. I hope they did not cross the connection. Well they did. My car whet into a mode where there was no excel eration. I then tested the battery and it was confirmed a bad battery. Then I put a brand new battery in the car and drove it up to my house at 15 MPH MAX to my House with only 1000rpm’s to 1300rpm’s. Age speed 10mph.. It had no acceleration or power. I was pedal to the medal trying to figure out what was going on. When I got home we tested the alternator and found the badd alternator on testing… Then after installing the alternator. we had a cheap code reader pull throttle problem. Lol ya..
After putting in the new alternator the problem didn’t go away some mechanics were telling me that I’m in limp mode and the cars trying to remember itself agian.. As i was getting ready to pull in to an autozone to have them read a more detailed code. I read something about this limp mode and was told to check my ETCS FUSE That could have been of from an improper jump start..THAT WAS IT !!!!!!!!!&%$# Well this was the problem this 10amo fuse was blown. I had a replacement and everything went back to normal. After 30miles the engine light went out now my car feels nice and stronger with a brand new alternator and battery. Be careful when jump starting with anybody!!!!!

I am also having same issue on this code p2118 which is giving me consign on if I should change the ECM because when I apply 12v to the throttle actuator motor it open the butterfly plate, so that gat me thinking what could be the problem and no fuse is bad but I do not know if it uses a relay or if there is a broken wire under the fuse box. by the way the car is a Toyota camry2008 le which had an accident and the damage part is at the passenger side. please can I get a solution from experts in this forum
